This special day was created by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana in the early 1970s, and it became an National Holiday In 1978 when President President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation reading, in part:
“As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love and respect build cohesive families and communities. The same bonds cement our Nation and the nations of the world. For most of us, this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighborhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family…I call upon the people of the United States and interested groups and organizations to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
We at TML would like to encourage Cape residents to stop by and pick up some of our free resources to help you connect with your neighbors. Although National Good Neighbor Day is now officially observed on September 28, we are using this day to begin encouraging library visitors to be deliberate in strengthening community connections. When you visit during the next few weeks, stop by the lobby and add a leaf to our Community Connection Tree, sharing an idea or two about ways to be a good neighbor.
If you would like to help us plan more community building initiatives for National Good Neighbor Day next year, please fill out this form. |

| Pollack Brook Burial Ground Plaque Unveiling |
Wednesday, September 30 5:00 pm |
|
| |
The Cape Elizabeth Conservation Committee invites community members to the Pollack Brook Burial Ground Plaque Unveiling on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 5 PM.
Parking is available at the Riverside Cemetery Overflow parking lot on the corner of Spurwink Avenue. Follow the trail at the edge of the parking lot, across the bridge to the Town Farm Trail side of the trail.
There are 51 virtually unmarked graves adjacent to the trail. These are in addition to the graveyard with the more traditional upright gravestones located further west on the point. The Conservation Committee has sponsored the placement of a marker mounted on a boulder to inform the public that they are walking by a burial ground. The marker includes a map where the graves have been GPS'd, so we have a more permanent record for the future. |
