Reading The Odyssey

Want to learn about The Odyssey to prepare to see the movie? Have you seen the movie and want to know more about the original work and Greek mythology? Here are a few books from our collection to help you out! (Hint: even if you're an adult, books written for kids can give you a great window into any topic!)

Plus, here's a fun fact: the Coen Brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou , starring George Clooney and John Tuturo, is a retelling of the Odyssey.

How Food Communicates
with Our Bodies

with Steve Deschenes

Thursday, July 30
4:00 - 5:30 pm

Food plays many roles in our lives. It can be a source of pleasure, and enjoyment; a means of connecting with one another through shared meals; a way to signify cultural identity; it can anchor us to the place we live; and it can be a medium through which we can express our creativity.

Join Nutrition Therapist Master Steve Deschenes for a presentation on how food communicates with our bodies in specific ways, and how these communication systems seem to be breaking down as a consequence of the modern food environment. We'll explore how the idea that a food's value derives solely from the sum of its nutrient parts may not be the best way to understand food and its relationship to our health. When we focus only on nutrients, we end up chasing our tail. It's not one single thing; it is the synergy between everything.

No registration necessary.

COMING UP NEXT WEEK

Drinks from the Garden

Tuesday, August 11
6:00 - 8:00 pm

Join us for a fun-filled, hands-on class from Claire Schreiber that will have you exploring a variety of ways to incorporate herbs, fruits and vegetables into drinks (mocktails and cocktails included!) you can make at home! We will spend time on vinegar shrubs - a fruit-infused vinegar that early settlers used as their own version of a refreshing sports drink.

In addition to shrubs, we'll discuss other creative uses of fruits, herbs, and vegetables in drinks such as flavored simple syrups and lightly touch on the topic of kombucha. This is a very fun class with many opportunities to sample!

Registration required

The first 12 registrants will be able to take samples home!

SPECIAL AUGUST EVENT

Big Little Lies
Book/TV Series Picnic & Discussion

Saturday, August 29
11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Join us for an outdoor coffee-and-pastries book discussion on the hit book and HBO series Big Little Lies, hosted in collaboration with nonprofit organization Finding Our Voices. While conversations about the reality of domestic violence are never easy, we hope that peering into the topic from the lens of popular culture may make it feel more accessible and safer. This discussion also comes on the heels of the August 25 release of Big Little Truths, Liane Moriarty’s long-awaited follow-up to her 2014 hit, and we will have a drawing for a free copy of the new book at this event.

Please register if you plan to attend!

Our Summer Reading Program runs through August 15--there's still time to participate! We have a program for every stage of life, babies through adults.  When you sign up, you'll receive a reading record, and then have fun completing our challenges and compete for a range of fun prizes. We’re also offering an array of programs and events related to the mission of the Locker Project , our inaugural Community Spotlight Organization.
