Last year, TML's Teen Leadership Council (TLC) worked with Youth Services Librarian Sierra Aceto and staff from the Maine Youth Action Network, to develop plans for a functional and inviting space for teens within the library.

Thanks to funding from the TML Foundation, we were able to put TLC's recommendations into action! In phase one of the project, which took place last October, we installed glass walls around a portion of the teen area to provide a sound-dampened area for teens feel comfortable being themselves. In phase two, we made some adjustments to shelving so that the entire teen collection can be housed in the area just outside the lounge space.

And finally, at the end of April, new furnishings were installed. The members of TLC had looked at the range of furnishings available, considered how they most wanted to use the space, and made their recommendations. From there, a designer determined how everything they wanted to could fit in the space. The space includes:

• Two movable tables that can be pushed together or used separately
• Two cafe-height tables equipped with power and charging stations
• Three lounge chairs with adjustable laptop trays
• A storage cabinet for craft supplies, board games, free personal care items, noise-canceling headphones, fidgets, and more!

We will have a celebration of the new space after school on Friday, May 22 at 3:30 pm. Stop by and check it out!

We use padded mailing envelopes to protect CDs and DVDs when we package them up for interlibrary loan delivery. 

If you have any used padded envelopes, don't throw them away--we can use them! 

Just drop them off at the circulation desk upstairs!

You might get discouraged if you search our catalog for current very popular titles and see a huge number of holds and no copies currently available. We keep a close eye on how many TML cardholders have requested popular titles so we can purchase additional titles if necessary. Here are some things to keep in mind:

• The total number of holds listed in the catalog is based on all of the 60+ libraries across the state that participate in the Minerva consortium. 
• TML cardholders have priority for copies of a book owned by TML.
• For every 5 holds on a title by TML cardholders, we will purchase an additional copy.
• Other libraries in the Minerva consortium will also continue to add copies of popular titles, so the total hold and copy counts are constantly in flux.

If there's a title you want in Cloud Library but you see a wait time of many months, or even years, don't despair! We also keep a close eye on holds on popular titles, and we purchase additional "copies" as needed. TML cardholders have priority for ebooks and audiobooks TML has purchased, so those wait times will instantly collapse for you once we've placed an order.

If something is in an electronic format, you might assume, it is infinitely reproducible and therefore always available. While this might be technologically true, unfortunately, this is now how digital resources work with regard to publishing and libraries.

In order to lend ebooks or downloadable audiobooks, libraries must actually purchase a license for each individual title and format. Each license carries with it a number of restrictions--most notably, that each title can only be borrowed by one user at a time. Other restrictions vary by publisher, but most ebook and audiobook licenses expire after one or two years, or after 26 checkouts--after which time a library will need to repurchase it in order to make it available to library cardholders.

Most of the titles in Cloud Library are purchased by our statewide Download Library consortium, to which participating libraries pay an annual membership fee. As noted above, individual libraries in the consortium have the ability to purchase additional "copies" for which their own cardholders have priority access. This practice is often quite challenging for many libraries, however, because digital "copies" typically cost three, four, or five times as much as a print copy! For example, the ebook of The Last Mandarin, by Louise Penny costs the library $60.00, whereas the hardcover print edition costs the library less than $20.00--and the ebook expires after 2 years (a print book lasts way longer than that!)

Keep placing those holds! Don't get discouraged when you see high hold numbers or long wait times. Instead, go ahead and place those items on hold and know that we are constantly monitoring the situation and will make additional purchases as necessary to reduce wait times. Have any questions? Many movies are being released only on Blu-Ray disc these days, and some of the titles in the library's collection are only available for borrowing in this format. To help make sure everyone has the opportunity to take advantage of the library's collection of movies on Blu-Ray, TML now has two Blu-Ray players available for borrowing. Not only can you use these devices to play Blu-Ray discs, you can also share photos, videos or music to your TV through the front USB port.

 Like most of the items in our Library of Things Collection, these devices can be borrowed for three weeks, and cannot be reserved. Stop by the library or call us to check availability at 207-799-1720.

• Tuesday-Thursday 7:30 AM - 4 PM

The Naples Lions Club invites you and your families to a one and a half hour Memorial Day cruise on the Songo River Queen II to honor and pay tribute for your time served in the United States Military. Veterans or Active Duty Service men or women, and their immediate family board for free.  Please inquire in advance if additional guests are desired.

Please bring an ID or documentation to show active or prior military involvement. Boarding begins one half-hour before departure. We hope you will come and enjoy a leisurely cruise along beautiful Long Lake. We plan to provide complimentary refreshments.

A cash cocktail bar is available onboard.
